July 1 is Here!

Are you ready for summer? We sure are here at Casa De Marvelous! We had some HOT weather at the end of June and then we had some rain, and we are looking forward to the renovations that are going on (NOT!) 

Now lets get on with the everything that is happening in July and on July the First!

Pet Hydration Month

  

 

Did you know that your furry little body is made up of 60-70% water? I didn't! AND, not getting enough water can lead to dehydration! 

This is NOT GOOD!

And us felines aren’t always that big on drinking water, the heat can make it too easy for us to become dehydrated. With these hot summers, it is impawtant that us furrys have access to water. Because we live in the middle of nowhere and we have to worry about wild fires, Mom keeps a gallon jug of water and a bowl at all times in the car in case we have to bug out without time to pack are go bags and stuff. We also have a water dish on the back deck that Mom fills fresh everyday (I have even seen the bids use our water dish).

 Lost Dog Prevention Month

 

Lost DOG (or Pet) Prevention Month in July is dedicated to educating pet parents on how to keep their pets safe. We bring it up now because worldwide missing pets numbers spike in these warmer months.
The data is clear. Summer seems to pose new dangers to our furry friends. Why you ask?
Open doors and windows
Pets are purrticularly vulnerable if they haven't had previous experience outdoors. Dangers like traffic, predators, and other people can threaten your pet's safety. This can make us scared and we run away and hide somewhere isolated and secure.

Fireworks!
The loud bangs and flashes of fireworks can trigger us to run and hide! This is a big cause of dogs and cats running far away from home, getting disoriented, and getting lost.
Believe it or not Visitors!
Having visitors coming and going can be scarey. My home is my territory to keep safe and protected. This is difficult when strangers are coming in to MY TERRITORY! Some of us may decide to seek a safer territory outside of the home.

National ID Your Pet Day 

 

 Hand in Hand (or Paw in Paw) is ID your Pet Day!  Today is to raise awareness about the importance of proper identification for us pets. Peeps need to ensure their furry friends are wearing collars with ID tags or have a microchip implanted. This way the chances are greatly increased that we will be reunited with our families when we wander off on adventures.
The exact origins of National ID Your Pet Day are as mysterious as Me, Marvelous secretly plotting world domination. But, it's safe to say that Peeps everywhere can appreciate the importance of keeping US safe and ensure we can find our way back home.

From the Pacific to the Arctic to the Atlantic, Canada stretches along 243,000 km of stunning shoreline. That’s a whole lot of breathtaking views—and seafood!

 

    Our teenie tiny village will be celebrating! The fire department will be cooking a pancake breakfast then around noon there will be a parade with Firetrucks, horses and kids on bikes from the High School to the water park in James McMynn park. With races, and a band. There will be a big blowout BBQ  too! They are expecting to cook ribs, burgers, chicken and hot dogs and there will be some terrific salads, and (of course) CAKE for desert! Later in the evening and starting around 7:30 there will be Rocking Ronny's Band (best rock and roll ever) and a beer garden  AND FIREWORKS! Mom's not sure if she will be able to attend the whole thing. Alex has to head to Saskatchewan and will be gone! But she can see the fireworks from our house! The big excitement and the most fun is the RIVER and TUBING!

It's July and it's Lost Pet Prevention Month, Pet Hydration Awareness Month and it's ID Your Pet Day & American Zoo Day

 

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month

National Lost Pet Prevention Month in July is dedicated to educating pet parents on how to keep their pets safe. It comes at the height of summer because we're seeing a worldwide trend of missing pets spiking in these warmer months.

National Pet Hydration Awareness Month

Pet Safe has declared July Pet Hydration Awareness Month. Did you know that us pets are 80% water and you Peeps are only 60%? Us pets need 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight. Most pets don’t get enough water, especially during extreme temperatures.

ID Your Pet Day!

When it comes to ID Your Pet Day, nothing is more important than having the right information on your pet’s ID tag. And it’s important to think about the different types of pet identification available and how they can help keep your furry friends safe. Here are three popular ways to identify your pet:

• Collars with Name Tags
• Micro Chips
• GPS Trackers

These make it easy to get reunited, if we get lost, it shows you care about our safety. AND 

 

Although it only works with Apple Phones, Nutmeg has an Air Tag on her collar. There are enough people with iPhones in our village that if Nutmeg got lost here, She will show up in the Find My App on Mom's phone!  

American Zoo Day!

The day commemorates the opening of the Philadelphia Zoo, the nation’s first, which began welcoming visitors back in 1874. This event set the stage for the evolution of zoos across the country from mere animal collections to centers focused on conservation, education, and recreation.

July is a busy Month!

July is Pet Hydration Month!

 Its getting HOT outside! Now we have global warming, summers can be brutal, so staying hydrated is more important than ever.  Us pets rely on our Peeps to ensure they’re getting enough to drink on these hot days! Cats can be particular about water. Nellie Bellie LOVED her fountain because she liked to drink running water (must have been the river that runs through our back yard). Cinnamon and Nutmeg have a HUGE water bowl that Mom puts cold water into almost every time she walks by! Us cats drink out of that bowl too.

Lost Pet Prevention Month!

  

At the beginning of  July, Canadians and and Americans celebrate Canada and Independence Day. These celebrations involve a whole lot of noise (like fireworks) and many pets run and get losted! Many organizations want people to be aware - so emphasizing that July is Lost Pet Prevention Month makes a ton of of sense. Last year, I, Marvelous would NOT listen to Mom and come inside--and the fireworks scared Me! Luckily I ran towards the house, dived into the garage and hid under the work bench! This year I am making sure that I come in where I can hide UTB (under the bed) with Kozmo and Jo Jo.

ID Your Pet Day - July 1, 2023

  

We at Casa De Marvelous all are all microchipped--except for Nutmeg, but she is still a baby! She will be getting her chip later this month as we could not get her into see the vet until later in July. Cinnamon and Nutmeg have their village dog licence and wear it on their collars when they are outside.  I, Marvelous have a licence that Mom keeps in her wallet.

American ZOO Day, July 1, 2024

 

 

Wow! We got to the final event for today's post! This day spotlights the place zoos play in wildlife conservation and education. If you live in the big city, there are not a lot of wild animals and when you go to a zoo, visitors can see the fascinating world of animals, their species and their habitats.

American Zoo Day is important. It shows people the importance of conservation. Zoos are crucial in protecting endangered species, offering a sanctuary for breeding and rehabilitation, and serving as a bridge between humans and nature.We don't have a zoo here in the middle of nowhere and we have to remind our visitors that they can't walk up to bears, deer, elk and other wild things...they are dangerous! Mom was talking to a lady in the campground and she wanted to know where the cages were, where we kept the bears at night, as she had not yet seen one on her visit and thought maybe she could see one at the cages...

Canada Day - July 1, 2024

 

On Canada Day us in the Great White North reflect on what it means to be Canadian, to share what makes us proud and to celebrate in our own way. Canada Day highlights the richness of our land, our diversity, our culture, our contributions, but above all, our people. Since 1868, July 1 us Canadians from all communities to come together. 

 

Now please excuse me, its time to rest up before the fireworks!

Today is CANADA DAY!

Mom was explaining to me that it is sort of like the US Independence Day on July Fourth but different.

July 1st is the anniversary of Confederation - that is the day the British North America (BNA) Act came into effect in 1867 and the Dominion of Canada was created by the British Parliament. BUT only some parts (there were only 3 provinces then), and Indigenous Peoples had no say in the decision. 

The BNA Act meant the Dominion of Canada was a self-governing entity and no longer a British Colony. Canada's  independence grew from there. 

Then in 1931 - 64 years later, with the Statute of Westminster, Canada was awarded full legal freedom! But there is MORE!

Canada's actual Independence Day is technically, April 17, 1982. That is when we repatriated our constitution from Great Britain, so I guess that makes us only 40.

Us Canadians love a good summer party...we all celebrate July 1, 1867 and this year Canada is 155 years old.

It is very unlike the 4th of July. On Canada Day (most) stores are closed. If we have a parade it is subdued and colourful. Here in Midway, it is kids on bicycles that have streamers, in another village in BC, they all dress in their inflatable T-Rex costumes and march down the main street. In Greenwood, they break out the Japanese drums and there is a terrific Bingo Game. In Rock Creek the river tubing will start. Most Canadians to the park and have a picnic. The Fire Department puts on a display of skills, the most important skill is the pancakes they make for breakfast at 9 am! There will be a BBQ in the park, sack races, egg and spoon races, boccie ball, baseball, water balloon dodge ball, music, ice cream, kids, dogs and we all wear red shirts and when it gets dark (which is about 10 PM) we will watch fireworks. 

Mom can't wait! 

And we can't wait for the hot dogs! Fire up the grill Mom!

Happy Canada Day Hosers! (and a Poem)

 Yes! We live in the Great White North! We are  413.51 m (1,356.66 ft) from the USA. 

 

 

Today, besides trying to keep cool, we are celebrating Canada's Birthday! 

 

Our furrends know that we often refer to where we live as the "Great White North". And some have asked why. As it is Canada Day, we thought we would tell you where that comes from.

 

One of Mom's favorite TV shows in the late 70s was SCTV. One of our human brother's Dad's furrends was a producer for the show, so it was watched religiously. 

 

"Ironically, the most popular sketch in the program's eight-year history was intended as throw-away filler. Bob and Doug McKenzie, the dim-witted, beer-chugging, and back bacon-eating brothers in a recurring Canadian-themed sketch called Great White North, were initially developed by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, respectively, as a sardonic response to the CBC network's request that the show feature two minutes of "identifiably Canadian content" in every episode. The two-minute length reflects the fact that American shows were two minutes shorter than Canadian ones (to allow more commercials), leaving two minutes needing content for the Canadian market. The Bob and Doug McKenzie segments first appeared in 1980 at the start of season three and continued in every episode until Thomas and Moranis left the series.

The characters ultimately became icons of the very Canadian culture they parodied, spinning off albums, a feature film (Strange Brew), commercials, and numerous TV and film cameos. Bob and Doug helped popularize the stereotypical Canadian trait of adding "eh" to the end of sentences, a facet of Canadian life often gently ridiculed in American shows featuring Canadian characters. Lines from the sketch, such as "Take off, you hoser!", became part of North American popular culture." (from Wikipedia)

As I walk along the the street
A door swings open in the in the heat
I see the tables and the bottles
And my restraint, slowly topples
I open the door and am amazed!
As my eyes are slowly raised
I see the wall of bottles shine
On the shelves all made from pine
Every bottle tells a story
about a person's fall from glory
I look and see (as if I can)
That inside each there lies a man!
I turn and leave and walk away
Perhaps I'll be back another day.
