Groundhog Day is celebrated annually across North America in which ‘prognosticating’ animals predict the onset of spring.
On this day various groundhogs across North America are consulted by local public figures (often a mayor) for an annual weather prediction:
If the groundhog ‘sees its shadow’, it means 6 more weeks of winter
If the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, spring will come early
Since groundhogs can’t speak English, they communicate their ‘prognostication’ in ‘Groundhogese’ — a language known only to specially-ordained groundhogs and the presiding officiant.
Here in Midway we don't have Ground Hogs, we have gophers and Marmots AND Midway Mike!
He can Dance!

ReplyDeleteI am delighted to report that The Grey's shadow is nowhere to be seen this morning in the Bonny Land... could spring be close?! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
Nutmeg really is a nutcase! Looks like you have 6 weeks more of winter. No chance of seeing any shadows here, it is grey and overcast.
ReplyDeleteNutmeg makes a much cuter sundial, than a groundhog.. no groundhogs here and its a really rare day when we don't see a shadow of whatever is outside. we did have 2 days of cloudy but no rain, so wonder what that means for us
ReplyDeleteBuckeye Chuck did not see his shadow here, it is a miserable dark day, so Spring is to be early. Right. Huh. We'll see what April brings won't we. BFF Jo Jo, we luv yer Valentine. And Nutmeg, you will undoubtedly proclaim more winter with more snow.
ReplyDeleteoh Nutball, yoo r a nutball!!!!
ReplyDeleteNo wonder the rest of the world thinks the US is nutty...a groundhog?!?
ReplyDeleteLady saw Phil said 6 more weeks of winter, but an extra 25% for Canadians . . . . Willie said early spring. We will see who is right! Lee and Phod
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job as a substitute groundhog, Nutmeg.
ReplyDeleteNutmeg, you might remind Marv you don't control the weather, you just report it.
ReplyDeleteNutmeg, you should try that again. And go stand in the shade so you don't see your shadow. :)
ReplyDeleteJo Jo, we love you, too!
You are quite the character Nutmeg! We are more than ready for Spring too!
ReplyDeleteI love your header and Midway Mike. :) XO
ReplyDeleteHere in Israel, the earliest sign of spring is the almond tree. It's supposed to blossom around Tu b'Shvat, which is in less than two weeks time.
ReplyDeleteWe aren't even sure what a groundhog is!
Java Bean: "Ayyy, well it's Groundhog Day ... Again ..."
ReplyDeleteLulu: "You have so much lovely snow there Nutmeg! I would love to come and play in it!"
Oh, Nutmeg!! Your shadow was perfection, but...um...the snow will stick around for at least Another 6 weeks...arrgghhhhh!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have more snow than we do...but we are getting some more right now...sigh...
