The Moose Floatie Booty Adventure!

Ahoy, Mates!

I, Pirate Captain Marvelous am setting sail on Jewel Lake this fine Talk Like a Pirate Day, seeking calm seas and a bit of sunshine.

My mighty vessel? A Moose Floatie with antlers fit for a legend.

Once it was blown up and placed in the water, I leapt aboard (holding on to my paper pirate hat), with grace and finesse.

Next, Jo Jo, tentatively crept onto the slippery plastic..."It moves under my claw pads..." she meowed.

FINALLY - First Mate Nutmeg, with her BONEY flag gripped tightly in her teeth bounded aboard, tail twitching and eyes wide. The Moose swayed scarily from side to side...

“Arrr, steady as she goes!” I, Pirate Captain Marvelous declared.

But Jo Jo, ever suspicious of watercraft, unsheathed her claws for balance and

SCRITCH!

and the Moose began its slow, tragic descent.

As the bubbles rose and dignity sank, Nutmeg the brave leapt into the water and paddled to the front of the boat, barking orders like a seasoned lifeguard.

“Hold fast, Cap’n! I’ve got ye!”

She bit hard into the poor Moose's nose and headed for shore as fast as her legs could paddle!!

Moments later, the soggy crew was safe ashore.

Pirate Captain Marvelous shook the water from his whiskers and sighed.

“Next year,” he said, “we’re plundering dry land.”

The 2 cats and their hairy slobbery sister spent the rest of the sunny and warm afternoon digging holes in the sand of the beach, where the village used to be, looking for buried treasure. Here are some of the treasures we found:

Nutmeg Goes to the Lake!

 Alex came home this weekend! He has been building a ferry in Nelson, BC and comes home on his DAY off. Yes I said DAY! He only gets 1 and he drives home to see his Nutmeg (and do his laundry and have Mom cooked foods). Because there is a holiday this weekend, Alex got 2 days off! 

Nutmeg is ecstatic! This means she gets to sleep 2 nights with Alex, and she gets to hang out with him for a whole day! He was invited to go boating on Christina Lake and he took Nutmeg with him.

 

Christina Lake is about 20 km (12 miles) east of Grand Forks and just 1 km north of the US border. Mom has Find My on her phone and Nutmeg has an airtag on her collar so Mom got a picture on her phone of where she was!

She has her very own life jacket! And she was not the only kid on the boat! Our neighbor, who owns the boat, brought Hadley. Hadley is a little girl too and she is the same age as Nutmeg. They play together all the time and they got some epic plays in the boat together!

She told me the boat rocking and bumping was a little scary at first and that she thought she might get a little sea sick, but she got over it pretty fast and had a great time!

 They all got out of the boat at the top end of the lake to see the tree and go for a walk. Nutmeg was scared to get out, so she got lifted out and carried to the beach, that's where she saw a really strange tree! She thinks it was yelling at all the dogs to keep them away! She says she got carried back to the boat when they were ready to go back. She she says it was because she did NOT want to get her jacket wet and Hadly was being carried so she should be too!

All in all, she had a terrific time and says that she would love to go again! Alex said that she was a good grrl and kept Hadley from getting bored. Nutmeg says she LOVED all the attention and the wind blowing through her furs and all the wonderful treats that Hadley gave her!

 

 

July 31 is National Mutt Day!

 

Mom had a malfunction yesterday! Tigris (From the River Cats, formerly Lee & Phod) was pulled out of the jar!

AND

You missed Me, Marv, doing the pulling!

 

AND the Name that we pulled!

 

 Kten is the post name for the LADY at their blog and we sent them an email as to which one (Styx, Tigis or Lani would be in the Royal Pawtrait!

 

Today is Mutt Day and we are including a portrait of OUR PURRSONAL Mutt!

July 21 - No Pet Store Puppies Day

 

No Pet Store Puppies Day was initiated by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 2011. The day was established to spotlight the issue of puppy mills—large-scale commercial breeding facilities that prioritize profit over the well-being of dogs.

HSUS launched this day to educate the public about these practices and to promote adoption from shelters and reputable breeders instead.

Puppies from these mills are often sold in pet stores, and they typically endure poor living conditions, lack of proper veterinary care, and inadequate socialization.  

As you know, Nutmeg came to our house when Mr T (who lived across the street) realized that the puppy that he got, was too exuberant and  energetic for an Old Man. Mom had felt sorry for Mr T (and for the poor puppy who needed to be played with and loads more exercise!) But the best thing was we still had Cinnamon. Although Cinnamon was fighting cancer, she found having a new puppy in the house energized her! We are so furry happy that she made Cinnamon so much happier and Cinnamon taught her how to be a really good dog. Dr Ruth (our vet) said that getting Nutmeg was a wonderful thing to do for the 2 dogs.

 Nutmeg has grown into a wonderful Beauteous Dog! Even me Marvelous and Nutmeg get along now! Oh! Nutmeg's Sister (from a previous litter) lives up the street and her and Margaret get along and LOVE to play. They are so furry lucky that they get to play almost every day!

July 11 - All American Pet Photo Day

 

As you know, Mom is always busy and these last few weeks, it has been more than just Mom moaning over a hot laptop, it has been much crashing, smashing and banging!

We have a friend (Dean) who has been coming to our house everyday and he has torn apart the kitchen and it looks so much more different.  He and Mom are long time friends so there is much laughing! 

It has been really HOT this week to! So today we are taking a floatie ride down the Kettle River from Mill Beach to our house. 

THEN we remembered that it was All American Pet Photo Day and we though we should ride the other 100 yards over the border to the beach at Border Ranch! Jo Jo jumped out  and ran down the bank and took a photo of Kozmo, Me -- Marv and Nutcase er Nutmeg as we came around the bend where Boundary Creek flows into the Kettle.

June 22-26 Take Your Pet to Work Week

 

 

 Our Peep does not "work". She is old and retired, but she does take Nutmeg to the Social Centre with her. 

Nutmeg is a backseat Driver! She likes to "talk" to the people we pass that she knows!

Nutmeg has been going since she was a puppy. And you know what?!? It has helped Nutmeg to become a really "Good Girl". She has learned to be a very polite and welcoming. EVERYONE loves her!

 Nutmeg also LOVES to help Mom when she is making the badges for the Blogosphere

June 21 is the Summer Solstice, Pet Dad's Day and National Selfie Day!

 

Mom is going to a Solstice today!  Besides being the Solstice and Dad's Day and Selfie Day it is National Indigenous Day in Canada.  When the International Boundary Line was being surveyed in 1857 - 1861, the major portion of the large Indian band then living in the area moved to the reservation at Colville, Washington. One of the Indians entwined two sapling pines saying, "Though divided we are united still - we are one." This tree symbolises the the spirit of friendship existing between Canada and the United States.

 For many Indigenous Nations, the solstice has long marked a time of gathering, ceremony, harvesting, renewal, and connection to the land. Indigenous Nations hold and continue to carry forward ancient relationships to land, sky, water, and seasonal cycles. Different Nations have distinct teachings and traditions for the solstice, but common themes include:

• gratitude to the Creator,
• honoring the cycles of nature,
• community gatherings,
• songs, dances, and feasts,
• and passing knowledge between generations. 

Mom is going to a local Pow Wow to celebrate the Solstice and says she will enjoy the drumming-both hand held and the "grandmother drum", the Dance competitions the colourful Pow Wow dance costumes, the ribbon skirts and the bannock!

At our house, we have a Mom and we have an Alex! 

Nutmeg calls Alex her Dad! 

 

We think she is so lucky to have such a cool Dad who takes her for runs and walks (when he is home). Alex works out of town (alot) and we are so very lucky that for this contract, he is building a Ferry in a city only 2 hours away and he is close enough to come home on the Weekends.  

THIS makes Nutmeg so furrry happy! (She really misses him when he is gone). 

 

 

We wanted to capture a photo of her chasing Alex's One Wheel up the street but did not get a furry good one. SO We made a cartoon of them instead. 
 

 

 Alex is special. I gotta tell you, that even after 9 years after moving here to Canada, I am still a pretty untouchable cat. You don't want to try to pick me up! I turn into Mr TEETH!

 

 

 BUT I do LOVE Alex! Here is a photo of me thinking about jumping onto Alex's lap (he gives the bestest ear scritches) after Nutmeg jumped down.

 

 And here I am IN HIS LAP! 

 

 

YES! Mom was a little jealous!

April 17-23 National Pet ID Week

 

Its National Pet ID Week! AND its starting on a Friday this year! Yes, Weeks usually start on Monday but  National Pet ID Week is observed annually from April 17-23 as a way to educate pet owners and remind them of the importance of pet identification. Losing a pet is any owner's nightmare, so you should do everything you can to ensure your treasured dogs and cats are properly identified.

Our sister Nutmeg is really lucky.  

If she lived anywhere else and someone saw her out walking in the cold (by herself), they might think she was a lost dog!

Almost everyone knows who she is and where she lives and would bring her home IF she was alone. In this photo, Nutmeg decided she was Cold and started home by herself. Mom got a shot of her just as she walked up the drive way. Alex realized that she was gone and was just out of the photo behind her. 

BUT even if she lived where no one knew her or her name Mom (and Alex) have made sure that they have taken the 3 steps to ensure that she WILL make it home.

1. They make sure that she is always wearing an ID tag and a Collar.  

Nutmeg's collar has 3 tags, 1. is her Midway Dog Licence. This tag is registered at the village office and there they can look it up and call Mom. 2. Nutmeg also has a rabies tag. This tag has a QR Code and when scannned it gives the person the name and phone number of the Vet's office and Nutmeg's name. 3. This is a tag that has Nutmeg's name and Mom's phone number on it.
 

2. Nutmeg is Microchipped. 

When she was spayed, Mom got Nutmeg Microchipped. Mom went to their website and added all of Nutmeg's information. When her chip is scanned, the chip reader displays the website and Nutmeg's information is readily available.

3. Have the pet's current vet records, photos and identifying information readily available.

Because we live in a remote rural area that can be subject to flooding and wild fires, part of the Go Bag that we keep ready, there are records of all of us animals (and Mom and Alex) 

Mom has an expandable folder with all the relevent house info and the Pet Sections has our photos, vaccination and vet history, microchip information. This is helpful for sharing each pet's details (and for quickly and easily identifying the pet and proving ownership.) Mom says getting ready for this post reminded her that all of our current information should be checked and she updated our Photos!

A slice of Pi π Day!

today, we are hoping that we get PIe!

Pizza Pie and Cherrie Pie! 

Did you know that Pi Day was not an event until 1988?

You can check it out at the Exploratorium Website on their Slice of Pi Day page.

But in short - Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14 in American date format) because the date represents the first three digits of the mathematical constant
(3.14). Founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco, the day commemorates the constant, which represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. 

On to FOOD!

🐶 Can dogs eat pizza?

Technically, traditional pizza is not a dog-friendly food. Not only does it often contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs, like garlic and onions, but pizza generally has a lot of fat and sodium in it, which isn't good for any one.

Mom went looking and found a terrific recipie for a Dog Pizza!  

And she is going to try to find the time to make it! This pizza for dogs is made with a small amount of whole wheat dough, pumpkin puree, a little bit of cheese, and chicken. 

I, Marvelous firmly believe that if it is OK for dogs, it will be OK for Cats too! 

🐶 Can dogs eat Cherry Pi?

 Doenstairs, in the deep freeze, Mom has squirreled away some of the glorious cherries from last summer! 

Nutmeg likes cherries! She even likes them frozen. 

She will be baking one of her famous unsweetened (only fruit and spices) pies! This means that Nutmeg can have a little bit! (Me too--maybe...but I'm not into fruit...)

 We don't want anyone to be late- I guess I should have posted YESTERDAY!!

But guess who was late for dinner?

I forgot about the time change...it seemed so awfully early....

And guess what!!!! 

 

 

We don't have to go back when this time change comes again in the Fall!
