Wordy Wednesday With Marv

I may have dozed off in a perfectly reasonable teacup after imbibing LOADS of Catnip tea with June after the Tea Pawty ... I woke up to a MARCHING BAND! and Nellie Bellie was Campaign Manager-in-Chief again.

Flashback Alert!

Some dreams are stranger than others.

I dreamed I was on the campaign trail with Queen Nellie Bellie, Campaign Manager Extraordinaire, and her candidates, Smoke and Joe.

I could not believe it! There were donkeys in pork pie hats, floating teacups, a mysterious caterpillar dispensing questionable advice, and Kozmo supervising everything from the clouds.

I went to her blog and I found ALL the Campaign Posts from Smoke and Joe Running for President and Vice President! They travelled all over the USA in a Hot Air Balloon!

Flying the Balloon to Visit Phoebe of 15 and Meowing!

And the Great Debate!

And here is a photo of the campaign Team!

I could not believe this all happened 10 Years Ago!

Jesse You are Remembered

 I have no words...

B.C.'s animal rescue community is grieving the death of a Sooke man who was killed in Ukraine Sunday.

Jesse Adams, co-founder of RainCoast Dog Rescue Society, was evacuating animals from Kramatorsk, a city in eastern Ukraine, when he was killed, according to Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK).

"An enemy FPV [first-person view] drone attacked our vehicle, which had just been loaded with rescued animals," ARK said in a post on Facebook.

The Mad Hatter Tea Party

We opened our mailbox and what did we see?

A wonderful invite for Hatters,

One...

Two...

Three!

We opened our dress-up box and gave a great cheer!

For the perfect Wonderland costumes were all waiting here!

Marv is a Card Soldier, quite noble to behold,

Though he's secretly planning blog stories bold.

Nutmeg's the White Rabbit, with watch held up high,

"I have a job and a schedule..." (but she hasn't a clue why!)

Jo-Jo is Alice in a lovely dress of blue,

Looking proper and sensible... as troublemakers do!

Kozmo's the Cheshire Ghost perched high in a tree,

Watching all the nonsense unfold with ghostly glee.

Through the Looking Glass and down the Rabbit Hole,

We'll be drinking Wonderland tea from a bowl!

So gather your whiskers, your tails, and your crew,

We look forward to pawtying with YOU, YOU, and YOU! 🐾

Dear Readers,

June told me this was to be a civilized tea party!
Five minutes later there were cards flying, mushrooms gossiping, and somebody put me in charge of quality control. Naturally, chaos ensued.

🫖🐭😸

Marvelous
Chief Editor, Lap Inspector, and Card Soldier Extraordinaire

Oh Yes! Can I offer you a cup of Catnip Tea?

October 16, National Feral Cat Day

Global Cat Day is on October 16 annually. National Feral Cat Day, as a critical part of Global Cat Day, falls on the same date. Both were created by Alley Cat Allies and are observed by millions of people every year.
Global Cat Day is a day to embrace the global truth that Cats Are Community. This powerful statement is recognition that cats have lived alongside us for thousands of years, have a rightful place in our communities, and are beings with inherent value who deserve to be protected.
Cats are our family, our friends, and our neighbors, whether they are community cats who live outdoors among us or companion cats who live indoors with us. Our unique relationships with them span thousands of years and cross every border.
Every neighborhood, village, town, city, and country worldwide must have policies and programs that protect cats as community members. That is the thought leadership and change Global Cat Day is all about.

October 14 - Pet Obesity Day

Pet obesity is big problem for pets all over the world, but unfortunately, many people are unaware that their pets are obese. Due to this issue, the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) created National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, which falls on the second Wednesday of October each year. The organization’s mission is to spread awareness about pet obesity, so it shares resources to teach people and pet parents what they can do to help obese pets and prevent pet obesity from occurring.

What can a Pet Pawrent Do?
Identify if your pet is obese -- Check to see if your pet is at a normal weight. Weigh your pet and compare the measurement to their breed and age, or check out the free resources that APOP provides. It’s important to know when your pet’s weight might lead to a medical problem.
Take your pet for a walk (if possible) -- The walk will be beneficial for both you and your pet and will provide your pet with activity and help maintain their weight. Aim to make it a daily habit.
Help your pet exercise -- Another easy way to celebrate Pet Obesity Awareness Day is to have your pet exercise. Try to motivate them to move around in whichever way you find suitable. If you can, run with your pet, play with them, or engage in a fun activity that can keep you both stimulated. For everyone’s benefit, begin slowly and progressively increase the intensity over time.
Review your pet’s diet with a vet -- As one of the main reasons that pets get obese is a poor diet, celebrate this day by reviewing your pet’s diet with a vet and providing your furry friend with only healthy snacks
Spread awareness about pet obesity -- Finally, you can celebrate this day by spreading awareness about pet obesity and helping people around you understand how big of an issue it is.

October 12 is Canadian Thanksgiving!

Some Canadian Thanksgiving Trivia!

Canadian Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the second Monday in October, earlier than the American Thanksgiving, which is held in November. Since 1971 it has coincided with Columbus Day in the U.S.

The first Thanksgiving feast in the U.S. was held in 1621 when the Pilgrims celebrated their harvest. However, the Americans did not invent Thanksgiving. English navigator Martin Frobisher held a celebration of thanks in 1578 in what is now Newfoundland as he had survived the long journey over the seas.

There are 80 cranberry farms in B.C. with many destined for the Thanksgiving table, and while it is doubtful cranberries were served at the first Thanksgiving meals, the indigenous people used them for cooking and dyeing and introduced them to the pilgrims.

We want to invite you over for our feast!

October 4 is World Animal Day And St Francis Day

World Animal Day on October 4 is all about recognizing the vital role animals play in our lives, our companions, working partners, wildlife, and the beings who share our planet. It’s a global call to celebrate, protect, and advocate for their well‑being.

For the pet‑blogging community, it’s a natural fit: sharing stories that highlight compassion, posting educational content about responsible care, amplifying rescue groups, showcasing adoptable pets, or even creating themed art and badges that inspire others to get involved. Bloggers can turn their platforms into little beacons of kindness - reminding readers that every act of care, no matter how small, contributes to a world where animals are valued and protected.

The birds are flying south already and they are denuding the trees of all the nuts and fruit. What we can do is support our Overwintering Birds. Birds have highly active metabolisms and require calorie-dense food to maintain their body heat in extreme cold, especially when natural nut and fruit yields have failed. What We are doing at our house:

Provide High-Calorie Foods

Fill feeders with black oil sunflower seeds, shelled peanuts, and high-quality suet blocks. Suet and peanuts offer the dense fats and protein necessary for birds to survive freezing nights.

Offer a Clean Water Source

Finding liquid water can be harder for birds than finding food in freezing temperatures. Consider using a heated birdbath or an immersion heater to keep a shallow water source from freezing.

Maintain Feeder Hygiene:

Because many birds will crowd around the remaining food sources, clean your feeders bi-weekly with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) to prevent the spread of avian diseases.

St Francis Day

Many churches in Canada celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on October 4 each year. The feast commemorates the life of St Francis, who was born in the 12th century and is the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment. It is a popular day for pets to be “blessed”.

The world has been celebrating St Francis since 1228 when Pope Gregory IX pronounced St Francis a saint - That is 798 years ago! The pope also laid the foundation stone for the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. The church, also known as Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Would You Believe it's October ALREADY?

October!

Its the 10th Month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The "Eight" Month: The name comes from octo, the Latin word for eight. It was the eighth month in Romulus's old Roman calendar before January and February were added.

Old English Names: Ancestors in England once called it Winmonath (wine month) for grape pressing or Winterfylleth (winter full moon) for the arrival of winter.

It sits right in the middle of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the middle of spring in the Southern Hemisphere.

Halloween: Celebrated globally on October 31st with costumes, parties, and trick-or-treating.

Thanksgiving: Canada celebrates thanksgiving on the second Monday of the month. This is October 12th this year.

Us in the CatBlogosphere celebrate a number of events!

Furst are the Month long events! This month we celebrate:

Adopting Shelter Dogs, Dogs and Fostering Dogs!

In 1981, the American Humane Association founded Adopt A Dog Month. How you can contribute

Adopt: If your home and routine are ready for a long-term commitment, visit a local rescue or humane society.

Foster: If you cannot adopt permanently, temporary fostering helps shelters care for more animals.

Volunteer: Offer your time to walk dogs, socialize with them, or help out at shelter events.

Donate: Give supplies like food, bedding, and toys, or make a financial contribution to support rescue operations.

Black Cat Awareness Month!

In 2013 after its creator, Layla Morgan Wilde, a holistic cat expert, pet industry consultant, and founder of the popular blog Cat Wisdom 101, noticed that there was nothing dedicated to our sable feline companions on a national level. So, she launched the non-profit initiative Black Cats Tell All to promote black cat adoption. Such an observation was welcomed by animal lovers, as superstitions surrounding black cats have run rampant for centuries.

Pet Wellness Month

This month was designed as National Pet Wellness Month by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

What it is: A dedicated month-long observance to promote the physical, mental, and preventative health of companion animals.

Emphasizes: This month promotes balanced nutrition, regular exercise, routine veterinary check-ups, dental hygiene, and mental enrichment. It also highlighting the importance of senior pet care and biannual or annual veterinary wellness exams to catch potential health issues early.

And today is

Black Dog Day!

Did you know that black dogs are often the last to be adopted in shelters? That’s why we celebrate National Black Dog Day each October to spread awareness that every pup deserves a fur-ever home.
Many shelters and rescues across the world have reported that black or dark-colored dogs struggle to get adopted compared to lighter-colored pets.

World Rabies Day

The 28th of September is World Rabies Day. The mission of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main sources. Rabies is a disease that we all need to be aware of. It is present in (insert area), and it kills both animals and humans. The most important source of rabies in humans is from uncontrolled rabies in dogs, and children are often at greatest risk.

Rabies is a viral disease and kills both humans and animals. This disease is mostly spread by the bite of a rabid dog and if immediate treatment is not obtained will result in a terrible death.

To prevent the disease:

• Avoid all contact with stray, unknown or sick dogs.

• Get your dogs vaccinated annually against rabies.

If you are bitten by any animal you must:

i. Wash the wound immediately in running water and soap for 15 minutes!

ii. Put disinfectant on the wound.

iii. GET TO A CLINIC OR HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT!

For more information about rabies, check out the Mission Rabies site!

Autumn Equinox

Does the Kitty above remind you of anybody? If you guessed our angel furrend Katie Isabella, you would be correct! Today would have been Kozmo's Birthday and he asked Mom (when she was making the badges) if he could have her on the badge for his birthday!

Here are some flashbacks of the 2 of them!

Austin (on the left of Katie Isabella) and Kozmo are brothers by another mother. Austin and Kozmo used to LOVE to get together and often Kozmo would bring Katie when they were going out for Fish at the Bulkeley Arms in Austin's home town in Wales.

Kozmo and Katie like jokes and they Joke around ALOT!

AND with Angel Nellie Bellie having Nip-mohitos!

Wow! One year Kozmo went all out for New Years! He took Katie Isabella to Las Vegas!

I did NOT KNOW that the Tunnel PTUs had a node in the MGM Grand!

It looks like they had a great time! Koz texted me pictures! Of them in their room, of them at David Copperfield's show (he is a resident at the MGM Grand)

and they saw the Blue Man Group!

I thought they looked a little scary, but Kozmo said they LOVED Katie Isabella and they were super nice to them. They even took Kozmo and Katie to the New Years fireworks show so they would not be scared by the noise.

Kozmo even had a super duper photo portrait made of Katie Isabella! Is she not gorgeous!

It is terrific! She looks like the Queen she is!

Happy Equinox!

September 19 - Meow, Bark or Talk Like Pirate Day

The Moose Floatie Booty Adventure!

Ahoy, Mates!

I, Pirate Captain Marvelous am setting sail on Jewel Lake this fine Talk Like a Pirate Day, seeking calm seas and a bit of sunshine.

My mighty vessel? A Moose Floatie with antlers fit for a legend.

Once it was blown up and placed in the water, I leapt aboard (holding on to my paper pirate hat), with grace and finesse.

Next, Jo Jo, tentatively crept onto the slippery plastic..."It moves under my claw pads..." she meowed.

FINALLY - First Mate Nutmeg, with her BONEY flag gripped tightly in her teeth bounded aboard, tail twitching and eyes wide. The Moose swayed scarily from side to side...

“Arrr, steady as she goes!” I, Pirate Captain Marvelous declared.

But Jo Jo, ever suspicious of watercraft, unsheathed her claws for balance and

SCRITCH!

and the Moose began its slow, tragic descent.

As the bubbles rose and dignity sank, Nutmeg the brave leapt into the water and paddled to the front of the boat, barking orders like a seasoned lifeguard.

“Hold fast, Cap’n! I’ve got ye!”

She bit hard into the poor Moose's nose and headed for shore as fast as her legs could paddle!!

Moments later, the soggy crew was safe ashore.

Pirate Captain Marvelous shook the water from his whiskers and sighed.
“Next year,” he said, “we’re plundering dry land.”

The 2 cats and their hairy slobbery sister spent the rest of the sunny and warm afternoon digging holes in the sand of the beach, where the village used to be, looking for buried treasure. Here are some of the treasures we found:

Did YOU have a terrific Meow Like a Pirate Day too?

For a special flashback treat, Layla at Cat Wisdom 101 has posted about Merlin and Nellie's Wedding!

Kozmo is Gone

I am bereft. It has been 1 week since Kozmo disappeared. At first I did not want to admit the possibility that he was gone. We have searched hither and yon, up and down. though the bushes, along the river bank, under the rock piles and in the culverts. I guess I should back up a little bit. Thursday night, just before midnight, Kozmo screamed at me. He wanted out (for the 2nd time since I went to bed at 9:30PM).

Kozmo is an elderly cat. He was going deaf ...thus he yelled very VERY LOUDLY!

He had quite bad arthritis (particularly in the fall and winter because of the damp and cold) and he had thyroid disease and had to take meds twice a day. This year, he had a wonderful summer! He was out, about and (in the evenings, when it got cooler).

When I let him out shortly after midnight, I told him I would be back in 5 minutes. When I opened the door, there he was, and then he wasn't. He flipped his backend at me and ran off across the grass and into the ditch on the other side.

I let out a few HBO words, went back in and grabbed my book and went back to bed to read. 15 minutes later, I got up and checked to see if he was ready to come in...No Cat. 15 minutes later I did it again, still no Kozmo. Then again and again...And that time I fell asleep.

I woke up to the most incredible cat screams about 4:15! I ran to the door and saw a huge black shape flying across the river. (Because of the fires, a great horned owl had moved into our village.)

My heart lurched! I called and whistled but I got no response.

I did NOT fall back asleep. As soon as it got light I went out and started looking...

During the day, I talked to neighbors (and banged on doors, and searched people's yards). Signs went up, telephone chains went out and around the village. I then learned 4 other people were woken by the Owl. I also found out that the owl has taken at least 3 other village cats.

Alex got home on Sunday and he got all the little kids out looking for Kozmo (boy, kids are really good any getting into, under and around) and checked out the fields and with the village workers and the fire fighters Alex checked out the Public Works Yard across the river.

This week things have been quiet. I was hoping that Koz was hiding out somewhere, that he was frightened, stunned, perhaps hurt, people have been still checking their yards, the ditches when they walk and in and around anything that could hide a cat. But as the days went by, I kept hoping he was tucked away somewhere — hiding, recovering, waiting for the world to feel safe again. I held onto that hope because the alternative was too sharp to touch. But with everything we learned about the owl, and with every empty place we searched, it became harder to pretend he was simply out of sight.

Kozmo was old, proud, and fierce in his own way. He lived his life on his own terms — loud, stubborn, determined, and absolutely uninterested in being told what to do. And as the quiet settled over the village this week, I realized he likely left the world the same way he lived in it: choosing his own moment, his own way, his own path.

I can see him now — strutting his man‑cat strut across the Rainbow Bridge, tail high, yelling (very loudly) for the Lady Cat Love of his life… Katie Isabella.

Challenges in life don’t arise haphazardly, no matter how accidental or coincidental they may seem. They only arrive when you’re ready for transcending them.

We have received the most lovely Remembrances Photos!

First From Ann

& from Ingrid

Our home feels much quieter without Kozmo's clicking toenails and steady presence. Kozmo is survived by Jo Jo, Marvelous and the Hairy Slobbery Sister Nutmeg. His Peeps, Mom Barb and his human brother Alex are morning his rodent dispatching skills, his throaty purrs and how he loved to lie on your chest and nuzzle your chin. We also now have an empty spot on the couch that will take a long time to fill.
