Mom is going to a Solstice today! Besides being the Solstice and Dad's Day and Selfie Day it is National Indigenous Day in Canada. When the International Boundary Line was being surveyed in 1857 - 1861, the major portion of the large Indian band then living in the area moved to the reservation at Colville, Washington. One of the Indians entwined two sapling pines saying, "Though divided we are united still - we are one." This tree symbolises the the spirit of friendship existing between Canada and the United States.
For many Indigenous Nations, the solstice has long marked a time of gathering, ceremony, harvesting, renewal, and connection to the land. Indigenous Nations hold and continue to carry forward ancient relationships to land, sky, water, and seasonal cycles. Different Nations have distinct teachings and traditions for the solstice, but common themes include:- gratitude to the Creator,
- honoring the cycles of nature,
- community gatherings,
- songs, dances, and feasts,
- and passing knowledge between generations.
Mom is going to a local Pow Wow to celebrate the Solstice and says she will enjoy the drumming-both hand held and the "grandmother drum", the Dance competitions the colourful Pow Wow dance costumes, the ribbon skirts and the bannock!
Pet Dad's Day

Celebrating the solstice, and with a local pow wow, seems a great thing to do. Being more at one with nature is definitely needed in many lives right now. Wishing your day shines, and that your pa has a great day with the football
ReplyDeleteMarv, we are so glad to hear that your mom is celebrating all these special holidays at a pow wow today. So many things going on at one time. You and Nutmeg look terrific in front of the waterfall. Hope you didn't get too wet or take a shower while you were there. We love seeing your grandpaw enjoying a sporting game on tv! He looks terrific for 92 and we can only hope someday the rest of us can be the same way. Happy weekend
ReplyDeleteThere sure is a lot going on today. I hope your mom has fun at the Pow Wow. Maybe she can take pictures and show it to us later.
ReplyDeleteShe had a most wonderful time, but her pictures are horrible! Grampa got a pair of dinosaur socks from his grandson and he was tickled pink! Oh! No selfies survived the photoshoot yesterday either!
DeleteHappy Solstice Day and Happy Pet Dad's day too. I wish I could go to the PowWow with you. Really I do. This is Mom speaking. I don't think Katie would be enthused....she could stay home with Kozmo.
