Forget about purebred dogs (though we love those too)!
Today is the day for MIXED Breeds and Mutts is what it’s all about!
All of the dogs that have owned our Mom are (and were) MUTTS and Nutmeg is a real MUTT! Even her Peeps are MUTTS! BUT that does not stop her from being a Princess!
History of National Mutt Day
I, Marvelous, am a curious cat and I wanted to know why a mixed breed dog is called a mutt. Although the word “mutt” can sometimes mean negative things in English, calling a dog a mutt means that the dog’s parents were not registered and were not both the same breed. This does not mean that Mutts are not as good as purebreds, in fact, sometimes mixed breed dogs have the positive qualities of the breeds of each of their parents, making them delightful in all of the best ways. Sometimes it can be obvious by looking at certain mutts what breeds their parents were, but other times they may have a conglomeration of characteristics.
Colleen Paige, an animal welfare advocate and behaviorist, is the founder of National Mutt Day. Paige started this day in an effort to raise awareness about the problem of mixed breed dogs who are often abandoned.
Hmmmm...I wonder what us mixed breed cats are called...Do any of you guys know? And if you don't, what do you think we should be called?
We are thankful for YOU our furrends!

a kiss to all that pups who look so unique and cute
ReplyDeleteNutmeg is just a nut and a great mutt. She's fun to see with her royal crown on. Most of the purebred pups I see on the bike path are a bit jumpy and some times uncontrollable. But the mutts I encounter seem to be more relaxed and obey a tug on the leash. Just an observation, no real science here. Marv, we mixed breed kitties are sometimes just called "mixed up" but I think that has more to do with how we act, mol. Precious.
ReplyDeleteSome of the mutts are cuter than the pure breeds and you are one of the really cute ones, Nutmeg!
ReplyDeleteSince every human on the planet is a mutt, and every cat we've loved has been a mutt, we LURV mutts!
ReplyDeleteHorray for us mutts! My parents celebrate my uniqueness every day.
ReplyDeleteLulu: "We are both mutts here!"
ReplyDeleteJava Bean: "Ayyy, and I am a Super-Mutt! I have testing results from Embark to prove it!"
Charlee: "Our Dada calls us cats 'Moggies', at least when he isn't calling Chaplin and me 'Tuxies' and Oona a 'Ninja'."
Oona: "Why would anyone ever not call Oona a ninja when that is what she is?"

ReplyDeleteNon-breed cats are called Moggies (sing. Moggy). Mutts and Moggies are just MARVellous, I say!!! Hugs, whiskeries, and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
Am remembering how once upon a time they were called "57 varieties", I think (?) it was after the Heinz Co., who made 57 varieties of canned food ...
ReplyDeleteHappy International Mutt Day! XO
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a most special day sweetest Nutmeg!
ReplyDeleteMutts can be the best dogs ever. Mixed breed cats are simply Domestic Short Hairs (DSH), or Domestic Medium Hairs (DMH), or Domestic Long Hairs (DLH) depending on coat length.
