Celebrating August!

I, Marvelous, wanted to know more about August! So I did some looking on the interweb (its too hot to go outside...32c is 90f.)

August was once the sixth month of the year. In the original ten-month Roman calendar, the month went by the name of Sextilis, meaning “the sixth month” in Latin. It wasn’t until around 700BC that August was rudely shoved back in the order of months when January and February were added to the beginning of the year by King Numa Pompilius.

August has also had its number of days changed quite a few times. In the ten-month Roman calendar, the months all had either 30 or 31 days, totaling 304 days in the year. So, when  Pompilius added January and February, he also reduced the number of days in August to 29. It wasn’t until Julius Caesar changed it to the Julian calendar that August was given 31 days, and it’s stayed the same ever since!
Then, in 8 BC the month Sextilis was changed to Augustus, in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus.
In Europe, August is the holiday month! Most of the big cities stop work and go on holiday, but often they go to other cities, so it seems just as busy...I wonder when all those people who take care of tourists get to go on holiday?
There are some pretty fascinating holidays spread throughout August which are celebrated in different parts of the world. And following you can see all the special days that we celebrate in the Blogosphere!

August is National Immunization Month!

This month is a suggestion to pet owners how important it is to get our  four-legged companions vaccinated.
Vaccinations offer numerous benefits, including:
Disease Prevention: Vaccines are like invisible shields, protecting our pets from life-threatening diseases. They reduce the risk of illnesses or worse, so pets can continue living life with a wagging tail.
Longevity: Who doesn't want more quality time with their fur babies? Vaccinations can add years to their lives by preventing diseases that could cause long-term health issues.
Cost-Effective: Preventing diseases through vaccinations is often more affordable than treating the illnesses those diseases cause. Regular vaccinations can save pet owners from hefty veterinary bills associated with prolonged treatments.
Public Health: Some pet diseases can be transmitted to humans. By vaccinating our pets, we also contribute to public health by reducing the risk of zoonotic infections.

 National Dog Month

National Dog Month is celebrated in August to honor all dog breeds while raising awareness about dog adoption and rescue. It's a time for dog owners to show appreciation for their pets and promote responsible pet ownership.

DOGust!

Dogust = August 1!
DOGust falls on the 1st of August and was created as a universal birthday for shelter dogs. When you adopt a dog from a shelter, details of their past life are often unknown. And its impossible to know when they were born. North Shore Animal League America came up with a solution, and it’s called DOGust!
Now the...

My friend down at the river!

Now, I am off to go and lie in the shade by the river!

Down under, we know this as The Horse's Birthday - same sort of reasons. It's a busy month as the harvest starts to roll in and the last of the blooms make a splurge across the countryside and gardens. Crikey, how the year turns... hugswagswhiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  2. Thanks for all the great info, Marv! We've been lucky with cooler temps (25°C) and some much-needed rain, but we're told it will go back up to 30° late next week.

  6. Sept means 7, Oct is 8, Nov is 9, and Dec is 10, so the month names are wonky for sure.

  7. FUN FACTS! Gotta love "pompilius" ... and your badges are the best as always. Now we can only hope our would-be-pompous-emperor (the red tie one) doesn't mess with the calendar, name a month for his "glorious self" eliminate the holidays that don't celebrate him (he does NOT like animals and pets) and so on and so forth, all while still trying to take over you and your countrymen.

  12. Cool facts abut this month...Dalton was given an August Birthday of the 21st, as that was the day he was rescued, the first day of the rest of his life!
We had an actual BD for Benji, he must have been born in a shelter.
And both are Mutts, the day we missed...sigh... The fun thing about Mutts is that each one is UNIQUE! No two alike!
Stay cool you all! At least here our heat wave has broken and we feel a lot more comfy outside.

  16. It is odd how our calendar developed. The fact is, the Romans hated winter and that's why they only had ten months, they didn't count what is now January and February because they just wanted the cold time to go away!

I hope we all get a break from the heat soon.
