Memorial Day is a holiday in the United States that honors those who have died in the nation’s wars. It is observed annually on the last Monday in May. The day originated after the American Civil War, when citizens began placing flowers on the graves of those killed in battle.
Common traditions and ceremonies associated with Memorial Day include:
- Laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery
- Religious services, parades, and speeches
- Placement of flags, insignia, and flowers on the graves of veterans
The day has also come to signal the beginning of summer in the United States.
Now let's have a PAWTY!!!

We do not have an official start to summer in France, unless you count the equinox. For now, it is still a little too cool to be really summery.

Our unofficial start to summer is still cool and we are tired of the heat being on!
ReplyDeleteOur summer doesn't officially start until the summer solstice on June 21st. I hope we haven't already had our summer though as the last month has been sunny and warm, but cool at night. We have unsettled weather this week, and once the rain starts it never knows when to stop again!
ReplyDeletewe hope for a peaceful sommer for all of us... ;o)
ReplyDeleteThe "unofficial" start of summer started a few weeks ago with temps in the 90's!!!!
ReplyDeleteHope this is the official start to summer heat! We've had "blackberry winter" for weeks on end. Will say the blackberry flowers are doing great in the cold wet, lol. Thank you this purrfect Memorial Day tribute, Marv and family.

ReplyDeleteChaplin: "Our Dada went out very early to get the flag put up today! He didn't want to forget, but he also didn't want anyone to see him out there in his bathrobe ..."
ReplyDeleteFirst we remember, then we enjoy the freedom they helped us keep. Thank you for the badge.
