Take a hike day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society.
They envision a world where everyone feels welcome in the American hiking community and has permanent access to meaningful hiking, including urban, frontcountry, and backcountry opportunities. Today, we are going to talk about hiking with CATS!
Hiking with Cats is something that used to happen at Casa de Marv when it was home to the Cat From Hell. Queen Nellie was an outdoor adventurer from the furrst moment that she came to live with Mom. But it does take some time to get us felines ready to go out into the wilds!
It was not hard to teach Queen Nellie to walk on a leash. At the time, Mom (and Dad) were living in Edmonton and Queen Nellie (and Hissy Old Licorice) were indoor cats. Hissy Old Licorice was leash trained and he used to go for walks with the woofie of the time, Kokanee.
Mom says the most impawtant thing is making sure that the pets are vaccinated and take flea, tick and heartwork treatments, that pets are microchipped and have a collar and tags!
Snacks and water are impawtant for cats on hikes and you know what? Poopy bags are too! Mom says hiking means you Leave No Trace! This means you pack out all your trash and the kitty (and woofie) poop.
There are LOADS of articles (and pictures) of hiking cats on the interweb if you want to learn more about Hiking!
Where do YOU dream of Hiking?
NO hiking for YOU my dear lady ... not anytime soon, PURRomise! With or without cats or dogs ... still sending you POTP for good healing. Gentle hugs. But here, today ... a great post about walking and hiking with your pets ... sadly I've never even been able to get a simple collar on JUNE, she doesn't even much like to be touched much. Will never know why as she doesn't talk much either ... Happy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun. I'd definitely like hiking through a department store, when there weren't any humans or guards to stop me investigating.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week, Marv!

the only hiking cat I new before Tigger and now you, was Kat, on Madi's Mom blog. first ever cat on a leash. I did not know it was common... or that you could teach a cat to come. wow! I am impressed... hope you are feeling better and better each day
ReplyDeleteI think I have as much chance of hiking as you do, Barb! I never took the boys hiking, but we did walk around all of the fields most days. It is a fair distance though as the fields cover 17 acres, and by the time we walked forward and back along the dividing hedgerows it took at least two hours. Longer if they decided to look for mice!
ReplyDeleteMarv, that looks like me! In a harness! You'd never evfur git me in one, mol. And Lynn says the one above looks like our tripod Angel Peepers, who did venture to the edge of the patio to git green grass fur herself. Lynn loves to hike but I'll just sleep in. Precious PS, bet yer mom misses the hiking fur now.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, We think We might like to join Mummy on one of her hikes/field trips. She has one tomorrow. But We heard it's going to rain, so We will just wait to hear about it when She gets home and then imagine We were there...
ReplyDeleteHappy Take a hike day. I'm about to take a neighborhood hike. Once fall arrives and into spring I will be taking a few trails around lakes near our house. Lead Mine Lake was on yesterday's blog
ReplyDeleteHealing hugs to Mom Barb and all your furries giver her a few head bumps from me

Have only encountered one cat with their human in my travels in parks; was such fun!
ReplyDeleteWe like taking hikes but with our old age don't do it much any more. We've never seen a cat walking on leash on our walks. That would be a big surprise and we don't know how we would react.
ReplyDeleteJava Bean: "Ayyy, it's been way too long since we took a hike! Maybe next weekend!"
ReplyDeleteHiking with cats sure does sounds amazing with the right kitty, Marv! It does not surprise us one bit that Nellie was the fastest learner. She was so, so smart!
ReplyDeleteI don't like to give my cats a taste of the outdoors for fear they will try to get out. XO
ReplyDeleteI don’t think I would like riding around in a backpack. But I bet other cats would think it’s great. ~Murphy
ReplyDeleteCats are smart and can learn if they want to. My cats are indoor only except Tripod SissyCat, she was half feral all her life until she came here, and now she's old and just wants to lie on the porch in the sun and eat grass, no harness needed she is happy to stay put.
ReplyDeletewe would love to go hiking... maybe if our dad is in a better shape...
ReplyDeleteHikin' with cats? What a fantastic idea! I'm not even allowed on the road. purrs
ReplyDeleteWell, at this point I know you're not at all ikn hiking mode...but we sort of had one of our early non blogging kitties leash trained, but then I got way to busy to keep that up...sigh...I have seen a few kitties here on leash with their peeps. Such fun!! (Usually at rest stops when traveling or at the pet shop.)
