Rememberance Day

Today we are honouring our family and the others who gave their lives for our freedom.

In Canada, Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the official end of World War I - November 11, 1918.  Here it is called Remembrance Day, but it is also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is observed in many countries, including other Commonwealth countries (Australia and New Zealand) where it is also referred to as Armistice Day). In the United States, Veterans Day falls on the same date. In the United Kingdom, the Sunday closest to November 11 is known as Remembrance Sunday.

We wear red poppies in the weeks leading up to Rememberance Day to symbolize the memories of those who died in service to our country. These poppies, we place on the war memorials on Rememberance Day.

The poppy comes from a poem written by Col. John McCrae (a Canadian Doctor), called In Flanders Fields and describes the poppies growning in the Flemish graveyards where the soldiers are buried.

In Flanders Fields

    BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

        In Flanders fields.

Marv, Lynn and I thank you for this post. You look so handsome and so full of thought in your picture. Lynn remembers when she was a child that they passed the red poppies out at church and everyone there wore them. How time makes things change and how people forget what they never should. Precious

A lovely tribute post, for us all to never forget how and the true cost for the lives we enjoy here. I put the same poem in my post, too.
