August 17 - Black Cat Appreciation Day

National Black Cat Day points a spotlight on these misunderstood felines. It’s the perfect moment to promote adoption, celebrate their unique personality and remind people that these cats are just as loving as other pets or other animals.
Black cats have a slightly longer average lifespan than other cats, partly thanks to those same genes that make them resilient against FIV (though there's no conclusive evidence that their coat color is the cause of increased longevity).

Unfortunately, black cat breeds tend to stay in animal shelters longer than other cats. Why? Superstition lingers, and their features often don’t show up well in photos. But these cats make great pets and deserve loving forever homes just like any other animals.

Not every black cat is truly a solid black. Under sunlight, some cats reveal a tabby pattern, especially if the black comes from a diluted gene. Others may have undertones or variations in fur texture that change with seasons.

Their coat types can range from a silky coat to a luxurious coat, each giving the cat a unique appearance among other cats. A black cat can be found across many domestic cat breeds, not just one.

Black cats can be found in all of these breeds: Bombay-Bred to look like the wild black leopards of India, Bombay cats are loving pets who adore their families. They are a mix between Burmese and American Shorthair cats, Bombays have striking copper-colored eyes. Bombay cats are the only breed that only comes in black and are also very rare.

Black cats are found in all these breeds: Cornish Rex, American Bobtail, American Curl, Peterbald, Norwegian Forest, Maine Coon, Japanese Bobtail, Devon Rex, British Shorthair, Siberian, Persian, Oriental Shorthair, American Shorthair, American Wirehair, Selkirk Rex, Turkish Angora, LaPerm, Ragdoll, and Lykoi.

And our most favorite Internet Friend, the Ninja Cat Oona!

August 17th is Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Oona is the coolest black cat that we know! I, Marvelous, am absolutely amazed at how she rules her subjects!

When she arrived, she was barely the size of a potato—albeit a very judgmental, fluffy potato with piercing yellow eyes and a tail that flicked like a metronome of impending doom. She strutted into the house like she’d been summoned by ancient prophecy, surveyed her new domain with a single disdainful glance, and promptly claimed the comfiest pillow as her throne. Within 24 hours, the two humans were her loyal staff, the rescue dogs were demoted to footstools, and the tuxedo cats were assigned the roles of royal jesters (they were not amused). The imaginary tyrannosaurus rex, who had previously been the apex predator of the living room, now tiptoed around her like a nervous intern. She didn’t meow—she issued decrees.

As the days passed, her empire expanded. A couple of (imaginary) dogs were absorbed into her regime, bribed with crumbs and fear. The backyard wildlife—squirrels, birds, and one particularly bold raccoon—were forced into diplomatic relations, often involving intense staring contests and the occasional paw swipe through the window. She now presides over her kingdom from a sunbeam in the kitchen, where she lounges like Cleopatra with a fur coat and a superiority complex. The humans whisper about her rise to power over morning coffee, but it’s too late. The black cat rules, and all who dwell within her realm know one truth: resistance is futile, especially when she’s sitting on your laptop.

We all LOVE OONA!

(can I come and live with you too?)

Your #1 Fan Boy, Marvelous Marv

We did not realize we had 2 posts for Oonaverse Day and the WRONG one posted!
Oona, I apologize!
I blame it on my ancient (and forgetful) Peep!

Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Does this graphic resemble a certain Tuxedo cat that you all are familiar with? Like our resident Black (and White) Cat? Well, you would be right! Mom DID use him as the Model!

Kozmo thought we would show you some flashback photos that are Kozmo's purrsonal favorites.

As some of you know, Kozmo and Cinnamon were pair bonded. In this photo,  Kozmo is about 8 months old and Cinnamon is 2 months old. They wrestled, they played and they slept together. As they got older they did not wrestle (often) but they still slept together often and Kozmo loved to go on Cinnamon's walks.

Kozmo is a snazzy looking guy and three years ago he ordered a red bow tie on Amazon. In this Valentine card he looks just like the Man Cat in the cartoon!

He did not like it when Mom and Nellie were living in Vancouver, but he (and Cinnamon and Jo Jo) did come for a few visits at Queen Nellie's request. Especially when she she was getting older. She loved Kozmo and he her.

Kozmo has a girlfriend in the blogosphere that he has loved forever! The beautiful Katie Isabella! We are so glad that they have figured out why Katie has been feeling poorly and you KNOW that not only is Kozmo sending Love and purrs, me, Marv and Jo Jo and our new hairy slobbery sister Nutmeg send healing purrayers too!

Kozmo also has some pretty terrific dance moves. Here he is on a date with Katie Isabella!

Besides getting out and about and partying, Kozmo loves the quiet out here in our yard in the middle of nowhere. He like to spend a lot of time on the back deck watching the river go by (he says he is meditating but I did not cats snored when they meditate...)

Here he is last year wearing a regular tie! He wanted to impress Katie!

Austin (on the left of Katie Isabella) and Kozmo are brothers by another mother. Austin and Kozmo used to LOVE to get together and often Kozmo would bring Katie when they were going out for Fish at the Bulkeley Arms in Austin's home town in Wales.

Kozmo and Katie like jokes and they Joke around ALOT!

Kozmo is a breakfast guy - as you can tell, his favorite is Mice Krispies!

This summer has been HOT! Here is Kozmo melted into the cat tree

Kozmo has a LOT of Attitude! (But so do I, I think we got that from our Mom)

He is also an excellent typist, and really knows how to use the internet, he was Nellie Bellie's researcher and he really helps me out a lot too.

We hope you enjoyed all the photos and quick trip through Kozmo's favorite memories!
