The one last pieces of galvanised pipe in the house decided it absolutely MUST be replaced 5 weeks ago. It began to leak and that night, after wrapping flexseal around the leaking joint, Mom discovered that Ikea was opening a Kitchen Planning Store in the nearest big city (Kelowna), Mom called and made an appointment
Our house was built in 1956. Back then (like today) people in many rural areas had to buy things (like kitchen sinks) from catalogues (paper not virtual). And a "Shirley" was purchased that way and was installed.

Shirley is a 70 year old 2 bowl sink with sideboards on a metal cabinet. She needs to be refinished, she is rusting out (in spots), there are MANY, Many dents and chips and the pipe for the drain, goes through the back wall of the metal cupboard which connects to the galvanised pipe that has started to split and it is buried between the joists in the wall. to stop the leak, Mom wrapped the pipe with flex seal, but that is a short term solution. To fix the pipe, Shirley has to be removed, the pipes replaced and the wall will need some drywall repairs.
With Ikea opening a kitchen Design location in Kelowna, and combined with the sink -- all the stars lined up and Mom (and Alex) figured this was the perfect time to remove the old cupboards and the peninsula and rework the kitchen.
2 weeks ago, Mom went to Ikea and planned and bought all the things to replace all the old cupboards.
Today, Mom and her friend Dean went to Kelowna to pick up the parts!

Dean figures he (and Mom and us guys) should be able to get the kitchen finished in 2 weeks. (Mom also has to get a grant written in that 2 weeks)!
So we may fall behind in posting and visiting, but getting rid of that leaky drain pipe that has to be plunged every time the kitchen sink is used will be worth it!
Mom will try her hardest to keep up the posts (and include the kitchen progress) as we KNOW you guys are all interested in seeing ME, Marvelous, learn how to be a #1 Renovator!

we wish you lots of good mojo to finish the project... 98 boxes sounds like a good title for a song or a movie...

ReplyDeleteMarv, updates are definitely required... refurbing kitchens is one of life's great entertainments. Take it from one who has been there, done that... hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
That's a big job and it's going to be gorgeous when it's all done. We can see your mom standing at the kitchen sink and washing her dishes and smiling!
ReplyDeleteMarv and Kozmo we are not jealous of the job ahead. And would you look at all those cardboard boxes! This is going to be a jigsaw puzzle of all time. But we know that your Mommy needs to have this done, so the sooner the better. We have our paws 🐾 and fingers crossed that it all goes well.
