On Tuesday, July 21, the ASPCA will be celebrating national No Pet Store
Puppies Day, and we're asking for your help! This is a great chance to
educate your friends and family about what happens in puppy mills and
remind them not to buy puppies, or any pet supplies, from pet stores
that sell puppies—and adopt from a shelter or rescue group instead!
Do you think Puppy Mills are just a US problem? They happen up here in the middle of nowhere here too! Covid started a boom in people who wanted small dogs and loads of people began to breed them. Alas, some of these are still in business, even in our remote area!
Fortunately, there are all kinds of places where you can find a puppy
without supporting the puppy mill industry. Whether you’re looking for a
purebred pup or mixed breed, the following places are just a few
examples of where you can find your new furry friend.
Ethical Breeders
Our very own Nutmeg came from one of these places

Our local rescue, Boundary Helping Hands occasionally helps with dogs that have been abandoned or are rescued from other situations

Yay and Yay-Plus for rescue pups (and kitties and all other critters). Though we do not/cannot support the "national ASPCA" we do absolutely support the LOCAL SPCA organization (independent of the national group) and all independent breeding and rescue group. No Puppy Mills Ever, and please No More Cross Breeding for this special characteristics that only create unhealthy and eventually short-lived pets, so unfair to them ...
ReplyDeleteOur Mitch came from a pet store and we know we are not supposed to support this sort of thing but it was dad and not mom and Mitch was the most wonderful AireBoy ever♥

ReplyDeleteHere in the UK, puppy mills are still a problem even with a ban on sale in pet shops. They got crafty and claim to be home breeders and have a 'show mother'... It's heartbreaking. Hugs and wags YAM-aunty xxx
I live in a county and a part of the state of Ohio that has high Amish colony. These Amish people run puppy mills. No one seems to be able to shut them down because they don't live under our government rules. It's been a long time since I've lived in a big city where the pet stores did sell puppies but I certainly remember that. It was always so sad. I'm glad Nutmeg was not a puppy mill 🐶 puppy and now has a very happy home involving three cats a mom and a human brother.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad to think so many dogs suffer at the hands of breeders at puppy mills. Around here we're always helping the rescue groups as much as we can.
ReplyDeleteI agree. We have never had a pup from a pet store.
ReplyDeleteI linked this post to Awww Mondays.
Have a fabulous day and week. Scritches all around, a smooch to Marvelous Marv and a big hug to mom. ♥
Our state has made it illegal to sell dogs and cats at pet stores, only rescues to be adopted.
ReplyDeleteHowever, we know how insidious the puppy/kitten mill trade is, and it's got to stop!
Irresponsible breeders are awful.
ReplyDeletePuppy Mill owners should be, well, I'll leave it at that. Nutmeg, you are so adorable!
ReplyDeleteSo sad.I would never buy from a store when there are so many in need for rescue. XO
ReplyDeleteDalton came from an in store rescue/adoption event; Benji came from our local community humane society, Both were pulled out of high kill shelters in Texas...though why a high kill organization has the gall to call themselves a shelter is beyond me!
ReplyDeleteMy sister's dog came from a so called home breeder, but we both think it was actually a cover up from a puppy mill for designer dogs; he's a Poodle Schnuazer mix.
Nutmeg we love your big smile!!
Chaplin: "This is great for raising awareness. We sure wish all the animals could have good homes like we do!"
ReplyDeleteCharlee: "Yes, all of us came out of the shelters ― well, except for Oona. She is the odd cat out. She came from Dada's cousin's front porch when a neighborhood cat left her there."
Oona: "Oona does things her own way!"
We won't even go in a store which sells puppies. There are none around here, thank heaven,
ReplyDeleteEvery day should be no pet store puppy day, if you ask us!
