 First up is the Calendar!

 Hmmmm....What does May mean?

The fifth month of the Gregorian calendar, May, is defined as “the fifth month of the year, containing 31 days.” Got it. But where did this name come from?
The name for the month of May comes from Latin. The month May entered English in the 1050s. It developed from the Old English Maius, borrowed directly from the Latin Maius, short for Maius mÄ“nsis, “Maia’s month.” But who is this Maia?
She was the Greek goddess Maia (one of the Pleiades), the companions of Artemis, goddess of the hunt. This Maia was the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the Gods. But the Romans had yet another goddess named Maia, who just happened to share a name with the Greek goddess.

Now lets see what May means in the Pet Blogosphere!

May is Chip Your Pet Month!

Sadly, we know what it’s like to lose a pet. When we first moved back to Midway from Vancouver, our Ninja got lost. We felt helpless and devastated. An estimated 15% of pet owners will experience these feelings.1 Dogs usually fare better than cats since they’re more likely to wear identification, even if it’s just a collar. The other factor in canines’ favor is that your neighbors are more likely to know your pet with you walking them daily. Cats, not so much.
National Chip Your Pet Month is the brainchild of the American Kennel Club (AKC). It emphasizes the benefits of passive integrated transponder devices (PIT tags) for tracking animals since the mid-1980s. ALL of us are now chipped!

National Pet Month

National Pet Month was last Month (April) in the UK and it it May in the USA. Although Canada is NOT the 51 State, we are choosing to celebrate it in May too! The Campaign Is Coordinated By National Office Of Animal Health (NOAH) And Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA).

National Pet Month’s aims are to:

  •     Promote the benefits of pet ownership
  •     Support pet adoption
  •     Make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets
  •     Increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals
  •     Raise awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals

  5. Thanks for keeping us updated on all the important days for the upcoming month. We're both chipped and when Millie had an exam recently they scanned her and found it way down on her side and not in the middle of her back where it was inserted!

  7. Lots to celebrate this month. May also came, after the Roman Empire became ostensibly Christian, to mean Mary's month (May is a nickname for Mary). The Roman Catholic Church didn't like to have weddings in May, since it was dedicated to Mary for them, and thus there were plenty of weddings in June. It also helped that Juno, the goddess for whom the month is named, was goddess of love and marriage.
