First up is the Calendar!
Hmmmm....What does May mean?
The fifth month of the Gregorian calendar, May, is defined as “the fifth month of the year, containing 31 days.” Got it. But where did this name come from?
The name for the month of May comes from Latin. The month May entered English in the 1050s. It developed from the Old English Maius, borrowed directly from the Latin Maius, short for Maius mÄ“nsis, “Maia’s month.” But who is this Maia?
She was the Greek goddess Maia (one of the Pleiades), the companions of Artemis, goddess of the hunt. This Maia was the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the Gods. But the Romans had yet another goddess named Maia, who just happened to share a name with the Greek goddess.
Now lets see what May means in the Pet Blogosphere!

ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping us updated on all the important days for the upcoming month. We're both chipped and when Millie had an exam recently they scanned her and found it way down on her side and not in the middle of her back where it was inserted!
ReplyDeleteHappy May Day! XO
ReplyDeleteWe hope May is a good month for everyone!
ReplyDeleteLots to celebrate this month. May also came, after the Roman Empire became ostensibly Christian, to mean Mary's month (May is a nickname for Mary). The Roman Catholic Church didn't like to have weddings in May, since it was dedicated to Mary for them, and thus there were plenty of weddings in June. It also helped that Juno, the goddess for whom the month is named, was goddess of love and marriage.
ReplyDeleteHappy May Day...well, we are already late and it's the second, but who cares, LOL!!
ReplyDeleteWe pups both are chipped...
