Check the Chip Day!

This Monday, our new hairy slobbery sister Nutmeg went to the vet. It was an eventful day! Not only did she get spayed, she got the rest of her shots and she got MICRO-CHIPPED!

Microchip technology is found everywhere, from computers and cell phones, to implants in wild animals for tracking their movements, to pet microchips (I Marv have one) that provides identification information. Why should pets have microchips instead of a tattoo? Cinnamon had a tattoo. BUT tattoos can be hard to read. Cinnamon's was in her ear. It became faded over time, and the numbers were unreadable. Even when they are readable, the information about the pet and its owner can be difficult to obtain since there are no common databases for this information.

When Mom and Nutmeg got home, Mom went to the website, created a profile, added our information and that was it! The microchip package also came with a collar tag with contact information on it and Nutmeg's ID number.  Nutmeg wanted to know if the chip worked like an Air Tag (GPS TRacker). Nope. It has no battery and is totIlly inert. it is read by a special reader that vets and shelters have. So no, Mom can't track her with her phone (like she does her keys).

Microchips are now mandatory for all dogs travelling to the US, along with their Rabies vaccine information. Are you Microchipped?

Oh Yes! Nutmeg wanted you to know that she does not have to wear a collar of shame, she got a onesie!

Oh, Nutmeg - now we know that you came along just at the right time to fill a dog-space at Chez Marv! So glad you got your chip. My angel Jade was one of the first dogs to get hers wayyy back 20 years ago, when Australian put compulsory chipping into law. It's a great system. Now you are truly settled! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  6. Lulu: "We have all got chips here, and we're glad we do!"
Chaplin: "The pets who came before us didn't have chips, although Dennis told us that Tucker had a tattoo on his thigh. We always thought it meant Tucker was some kind of Canadian biker, but maybe it was just for ID."
Java Bean: "You look super cute in your onesie, Nutmeg! I had a onesie too after one of my procedures! Dada found it in the wash eventually after Mama put it in to be laundered and he had a dickens of a time figuring out who was supposed to wear such a small shirt ..."
