Welcome to October!
Are you ready for the cooler days? We sure are! We are also hoping that Mom slows down a little. She has had an over busy September and she has been mixing things up! Mom says she needs to remember to finish something before she starts doing something else...we agree! She is terrible at multi-tasking!
Here are the the events for The Month
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Many people also assume that dogs end up at a shelter or rescue because of behavioural issues. This is simply not the case. Most dogs are great canine citizens and just need that chance to be with a family in a forever home. So many dogs in shelters are there due to other life circumstances outside of their control. Perhaps their Peeps have sudden financial problems, health issues, moving, or a lifestyle change, these woofies deserve a chance to be part of a loving home.
If you decide to welcome a shelter dog into your life, there are some major benefits to YOU:
Furry friends make the BEST friends! They are always there when you need them the most, and they will never judge you for being you. Plus, they’re always super excited to see you, even if you’ve been apart for just a minute.
Help you to stay active! Your new furry buddy is the perfect excuse to get outside more and start a new routine! You may find yourself feeling better and more connected with nature.
Black Cat Awareness Month
Black Cat Awareness Month is celebrated every October. It aims to raise awareness about the misconceptions surrounding black cats and promote their adoption. The month was founded in 2013 by Layla Morgan Wilde (Catwisdom101.com) to combat the stigma that black cats are unlucky.
Studies show black cats are adopted at a rate 50% lower than other colors. But on our street in our village, us tabbies are in the minority! 6 out of 10 houses have a black cat (or 2)! By participating in Black Cat Awareness Month, you can help change perceptions and give these wonderful animals the loving homes they deserve!

National Pet Wellness Month
National Pet Wellness Month is observed in October and aims to promote the health and well-being of pets. It encourages pet owners to schedule veterinary check-ups, review their pets' diets, and engage in regular exercise and preventive care.
This month Kozmo goes for a Thyroid check and his shots, Jo Jo will get a checkup and her shots. Mom will get the deworming meds in case we got any from the mice we have been catching and gnawing on. Nutcase had her checkup 4 months ago. Will you get checked out this month?
Walk Your Dog Week
Black Dog Day
Some cultures view black cats and dogs as bringing luck, others view black animals as being intimidating, aggressive and violent. Because of these stereotypes, many adopters steer clear of dark dogs which results in higher rates of euthanasia amongst our black fur friends.
But the truth is, black dogs are no different to dogs of any other color. Equally loyal and loving they want the same as any other pup and deserve to be part of a loving forever family who will appreciate everything they have to offer.

ReplyDeleteAnother busy month, then! As I was setting out from Edinburgh to begin my drift north, a big black cat crossed the road in front of The Grey - and we took note and thanked it for sprinkling a little magic our way! hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

ReplyDeleteWe had a couple of black cats who were quite well behaved for cats.
ReplyDeleteHousepanthers are the very best!
ReplyDeleteThere sure is a lot going on in October. Millie and I were both adopted from a rescue.
ReplyDeleteHappy October everyone, such wonderful graphics, thanks! Howdy Marv!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the badges. Thanks for making them every month. XO
ReplyDeleteLulu: "These are such good points! I wasn't in the shelter for behavioral issues; I was there because my previous family moved away and didn't take me with them."
ReplyDeleteJava Bean: "Ayyy, I wasn't in the shelter for behavioral issues either! I was there because I was a street dog in Baja and got picked up by a rescue organization that brought me to the San Diego Humane Society."
Charlee: "Chaplin and I were born on the street too, that's how we ended up at the shelter."
Oona: "Oona was never at the shelter; she went straight from being left on Dada's cousin's porch by a neighborhood cat to crawling into Mama's lap at Dada's aunt's house to going home with Mama and Dada. But Dada's cousin did make sure to mention several times that black cats like Oona had a lot of trouble being adopted, which might have helped convince them to bring her home. That and Oona's undeniable cuteness of course."
Thank you so much for the badges, I try to remember to use them. I had already scheduled the October 1 post when they were put up, but I'll try to use all the other days.
ReplyDeleteRescues are the best and black dogs are beautiful, even if I'm not good at photographing them.
The badges are lovely. I have had black cats in the past and always considered all black cats to be lucky.
