Endangered Species Day

Every year on the third Friday in May, thousands of people around the world participate in Endangered Species Day by celebrating, learning about, and taking action to protect threatened and endangered species. This global day of action and celebration was created and founded by David Robinson and the Endangered Species Coalition in 2006, and has continued ever since.

On Endangered Species Day 2025, wildlife refuges, gardens, schools, libraries, museums, community groups, nonprofits, and individuals will hold special programs or events. People around the world participate in these activities and others. Join us in celebrating Endangered Species Day on Friday, May 16th and throughout the month of May!

Visit their site to learn and see more about this special day!

Here, where we live, in the middle of nowhere and far from the big city, we have endangered species! As a matter of fact six vertebrate species that lived in our region when Mom first moved here (30 years ago)  - the Pigmy Short-horned Lizard, White-tailed Jackrabbit, Burrowing Owl, Northern Leopard Frog, Sharp-tailed Grouse, and Sage Grouse - have disappeared from the region.

Although these species are NOT endangered elsewhere, the fact that they no longer inhabit where we live is concerning, not only for us, but for people who live within their range.

Here in BC we have 4 levels:

Extirpated species no longer occur in the wild in British Columbia but occur elsewhere.

Endangered species are facing imminent extinction or extirpation.

Threatened species are likely to become endangered if factors affecting them are not dealt with and trends reversed.

Vulnerable species are of concern because of characteristics that make them particularly sensitive to human activity or natural events.

  1. The grouse is so pretty and the lizard looks very grumpy. We have no idea what's endangered in our state but it's sad to see wildlife become endangered.

  4. Dear Marv, you take care of those creatures. We have too many endangered and threatened species here too. However, the black bear is making a come back and so is the bobcat, my favorite of both. Warblers are the ones going down hill and we saw very few this Spring. Precious

  6. Java Bean: "Ayyy, people sure are rough on the natural world, aren't they?"
Charlee: "We would be sorry to see the creatures go away. They are so much fun to stare at through the window."

  7. It is sad that so many species are becoming endangered. I was very surprised to read a few weeks ago that the common hedge sparrow is dropping dramatically in numbers. We have had more in the garden this year than ever. There are at least 5 nests in our Leylandii hedge.

  8. That's a very informative post. We've seen changes in the animals that have lived around our house over the decades we've been here.

  11. Barn owls are endangered here in Connecticut. Humans really have messed things up for animals, haven't we?

  12. We had no idea there was a special day for endangered species. We think it's one of those things that should be thought of every day, of course.
