Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
Here is some of the history from the Earth Day Web Site.
In the decades leading up to the first, Americans were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through massive and inefficient automobiles. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of the consequences from either the law or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Until this point, mainstream America remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and how a polluted environment threatens human health.
However, the stage was set for change with the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. The book represented a watershed moment, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries as it raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and the inextricable links between pollution and public health.
Here is this year's poster!

Alexis Rockman has created a truly special poster that I hope every school, library, and business will display to inspire people to support Earth Day 2025 and our theme backing renewable energy— Our Power, Our Planet.” said Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG. “This poster serves as a powerful reminder that we have energy options, and renewable energy can fuel our future without harming the planet. We invite everyone to join this movement and take action on Earth Action Day.

ReplyDeleteOh, if only all the leaders of this planet could embrace this initiative more enthusiastically... Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
If it doesn't make the big companies money, then they aren't interested.
ReplyDeleteThey'll appear to be all in, but they are not.
Happy Earth Day indeed. We wish the whole world would embrace Earth Day. What America did is now happening in India and China. Poor Planet Earth.
ReplyDeleteIts sad to see that the country to the south is not treating Mother Earth well. I am so sad seeing the things that are going on and I morn what will happen to the wilderness areas. We here in the middle of nowhere have noticed that the visitors to our area are leaving more and more garbage beside the trails, lakes, rivers, trees, etc. Many of us locals have taken up plogging, (which combines jogging or walking with litter cleanup. Plogging, originating in Scandinavia, involves picking up trash while engaging in outdoor exercise. This practice has gained popularity for its environmental and fitness benefits). Keep being awesome!

ReplyDeleteHappy Earth Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy Earth Day! We have our paws crossed that the humans all around the world will figure out how to keep us all safe.
ReplyDeleteThe utter lack of concern lots of people about for Mother Eartht is appalling. As it was in 1970, healing our planet needs to be a grassroots effort because it seems that many in power don't really care. :(
ReplyDeleteI remember celebrating the first Earth Day at a spring concert. Sometimes it doesn't seem like we're making much progress protecting out planet.
ReplyDeleteI pray we haven't started too late to learn the lesson of not fouling our own nest.
ReplyDeleteEarth Day is as old as me. Well , actually I will be 56 in July, but close. Great post. XO
