Now this has been Answer your Cats' Questions Day as long as I, Marvelous Marv, can remember, but our hairy slobbery sister has a question that she wanted answered and I told her that she could ask it today!
Mom, why don't people like me jumping up when I am greeting them?
Nutmeg! Jumping is NOT good!
Not only do you invade people's space, but your paws are dirty, your nails are long (and scratch).
You are not a heavy dog, but 25 pounds of dog, pushed by those 2 paws, well, sweetie, you knocked me down, think of what you could do to some other poor little old lady! Not only is it uncomfortable, but for me, now that I can't balance very well, its scary.
Why DO you jump?
Mom, because I am a dog, I NEED to get closer to your face for nose-to-nose contact, this is how puppies greet their mommies, plus you know seeing people always makes me happy and excited to see them! AND, I get a kick out of how people react!
Well, I think you like getting excited and you want attention! AND that gets reinforced when the people you jump on react, and the poor people you jump on inadvertently reward it with petting, eye contact, or vocalizations, even negative ones!
Now this is the kind of Jumping that's OK!

we love the jumping answer.. we jump with you for that LOL
ReplyDeleteI never go outside in the snow without my Hartz squeaky ball. I've never tried a snowball. hummmmm Great answer, Nutmeg!

ReplyDeleteNutmeg, your answer holds some logic. However, if you are going to live among hyoomons, you might have to learn the 'language' a bit - politeness, you know! My angel Jade was a springy gal, she had to learn there were negative consequences ("go to bed!") if she didn't keep all four on the floor... unless, the person greeted invited her up. It took some time and patience - and training of the regular visitors, too. Not everyone understands that they reinforce behaviours. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
Nutmeg, it's gotta be difficult to be a good pup that you are, and not git to jump up to great evfurry one you meet. We just hope da mom is recovered furom her fall a few weeks ago. And that the only hurts she feels is the old ones furom her broke bones. That's more'n enough . My question to Lynn is how come I only gits da food dish 3 times a day with my foods doled out like I'm still an orphan?
ReplyDeleteThose were some jumping fun questions and answers sweet Nutmeg!
ReplyDeletewe did not allow our dogs to jump on us, not even for fun, we just as soon as we got them, said a firm no, and pushed them down. there are many training videos hanging out, but I have no advice, except the word no and mean it. I do have to say, we always had large dogs, so that might be a difference.
ReplyDeleteI don't like pups jumping on me either. I'm old and a big dog can knock me down. That would not be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI linked this post to Wordless Wednesday.
Have a fabulous day and rest of the week. Scritches all around, a smooch to Marvelous Marv and a big hug to mom. ♥
I completely understand your need for jumping, Nutmeg. I'm half Boxer and we like to greet people by using the springs in our feet and jump straight up to say hi in their face.
ReplyDeleteGood question and answers, Nutmeg and mom. I am like your mom, and if you jumped up to me, I would fall over.
ReplyDeleteGreat questions and answers. XO
ReplyDeleteJump jump!
ReplyDeleteIt's not easy to break a high energy dog of jumping, but it can be done and I hope you succeed.
ReplyDeleteI have a umper anda non jumper! Though every once in a while he might give it a go... Yes it IS a bad habit...I often just ignore it and turn my back to them. When KI return from wherever, I do not get them all excited to see me again, I just quietly enter, do my 'stuff'; and when they are calm, then I acknowledge them.
ReplyDeleteChaplin: "It's true, even a small dog can knock down a human under the right circumstances! Dennis used to tell us a story that Tucker used to tell him about the time he took out our Dada's Dada back in New York. Tucker was running through the yard at top speed and crashed into him from behind. Got him right in the backs of the knees, down Dada's Dada went, and Tucker just kept going. And he only weight 38 pounds!"
ReplyDeleteJava Bean: "Ayyy, well, 38 pounds might be on the light side for a dog, but it's on the heavy side for a cannonball, sí?"
